NATLA Episode 2 ReAction/Commentary
oh boy, episode 2 here we go!
That voice crack! Love it! Matches his current rampage, early angry Zuko is a lot more fun than I remember him to be
Iroh spitting facts, very much enjoying his spoken words
Is that a possible momo?… It is a momo!
No pirates :( okay, guess I’ll accept it from GranGran
Never change Iroh, you hear me? Never change
I see the nicknames will continue in this iteration, very good, very good indeed ‘giant scarry lady’
There’s your sign Suki
Who’s this? Thought Suki was the single one in charge cause everyone else left, paralleling to Sokka
Oh, mother… got it, Sokka continuing to fall for the highest ranking children of the places he visits tracks
Sokka continuing to put his foot in his mouth, appreciate it
hahah, awkward, lookie lookie, Sokka you better watch out
Bonding time! Awe, look at them having fun bending water in a non water bender way
Yes! They got to include that part of the intro!
Suki saying they’ve avoid a lot of things as she looks longingly at Sokka holding food in his hands while chewing loudly hits my ironic humor for some reason
appreciate the character of ‘fire’ on Zhao’s belt buckle
BOOMERANG!!! bout time you showed up!
Sokka made Boomerang?! that matches his craftsmanship abilities
Sokka making a fool of himself never gets old
Ooo, a poster about her creation of Kyoshi Island, nice
Interesting getting more backstory on Aang’s training before he received his arrows
These Suki and Sokka moments are so cute and fun
Aang meets Kiyoshi first? That’s… quite the choice
Agree Iroh, Hope does have the ability to be cruel
Goodness Kiyoshi is tall, I knew she was /Giant/ but dang girl
Again, Iroh never change, also first Pai-Sho drop
Zhoa on the island, in-ter-est-ing
Yeah, Kiyoshi is not the one to have first contact with Aang
Ooo, predictions already about the north pole, interesting
Go Momo Go! … Oh hell yah Sokka!
Ooo bringing up hope again
Ow, was that Katara seeing what happened to her mother infront of her?
Ooo, instead of Roku possession we get a Kiyoshi possession
Hahah, Zuko really thinks he has a chance against Kiyoshi, thats cute
Element Whirl Pool!
He gets to keep her fan! Awwwwwe
I gasped, Zuko, honey, I know you how much this means to you, but this is Zhao … seeee, he’s setting you up with this deal
This message Zhou is sending with his fancy extravagant words to increase his importance and intelligence, more humor I wasn’t expecting
Ahh, the Fire Lord, Hello Ozai, isn’t it a bit too soon to be seeing you?

It’s fascinating to me that ppl think Aang wasn’t “running away” in natla
He leaves the temple to take a break, but we have no idea how far he would have gone or when he’d planned to come back if the storm had not hit. Either way, he left because the thought of being the avatar - and being separated from Gyatso — was too overwhelming (running away, however temporarily, from his duty)
He doesn’t learn waterbending because Gyatso was the only one who’d ever taught him and he’s not ready to let someone else do it. This is running away
He begs Kuruk to control him in the avatar state so he doesn’t have to figure things out on his own. Idk how ppl can’t grasp this is running away
On the flip-side Aang choosing to surrender to the ocean spirit and become “rage” is neither a pointless thing nor does it remove his agency. It’s different from what he does when he begs Kuruk to take control or allows Kyoshi control.
Aang chooses to become one with the Ocean Spirit because he feels he has failed too many times and there is no place for him in this world. He chooses this option because he knows he can’t control the avatar state, because he’s not the Avatar ppl wanted. He chooses it because he believes that even if he can’t save a world that deems him unnecessary, he can at least save the NWT and stop the fleet
The fact that Aang truly becomes lost to the Ocean Spirit in natla, instead of just getting help from the spirit, makes this choice even more poignant. The fact that Katara helps him return to himself (as well as Yue’s sacrifice) is also incredibly important
Aang was ready to give up everything because he believed he had nothing else to offer the people of this war-torn world. And it was the ppl - especially Katara, who truly believed in him and what he can do— who saves him
I’ve seen ppl complain about natla so much and accuse it of poor writing, no nuance, no complexity blah blah. But the fact so many ppl seem to miss the subtleties of the characters’ arcs in the show suggests to me you did actually need it spelled out
Like I do not think the show is perfect or the writing as tight as it could be. I feel that certain arcs needed to be explored more to execute them better. But I’m sick to death of seeing post after post acting like natla is all “no growth and everything handed to the characters” when original cartoon literally has Aang beat Ozai with a deus ex machina lion turtle and a conveniently placed rock

Reacting to live action AtLA - ep 6
Spoiler warning, blah blah blah
..
Pressing onward so that I can stop trying to avert my eyes from everywhere else online in hopes that I don't get spoiled or let others' thoughts guide my opinion. We last left off with spirit worlded Sokka & Katara's bodies being watched over by Appa & Momo (who I was really hoping to see more of, but I suppose CGI gets spendy), Aang heading off to Roku's temple on his lonesome, and Zuko & Iroh joining up with June. Let's see where we go from here..
..
Okay, gonna be the baby Zuko in the war council meeting this episode maybe?
Yes! New and improved Zhao showing up, much more reminiscent of OG Zhao.
Jokester Roku, um, okay. And now info from.. comics.. alright. But people need to stop telling this kid to do it alone. And no channeling of Roku this time. And June's got him? Head spinning.
Okay, flashback time now? Nah, only part of a flashback.
Yep, Zhao is definitely improved now. Still different than original, but I can get behind this take at least.
Blue Spirit, let's go (please please make this bit still hit hard). Okay, so far so good with this scene. Will we get the "friends" comment though? The focus on friendship was always the heart of the show. Enh, didn't quite get it.
Okay.. now time for the flashback? They're actually having him fight and not just kneel? Not impressed with that choice.. but I guess it fits with the direction this time. It just seemed to solidify Ozai as worse in my head to attack a kneeling, non-combative "opponent."
Ah good, they did include the friends comment. Seed planted.
I like this extended flashback choice, with the crew learning they're the soldiers that he saved. Still, I miss Zuko getting to demonstrate through his actions that he does value them (in the original, where he saves the guy in the storm/sets a safer course). Words are nice, actions are better.
Aww.. Aang's face when Gyatso was gone. :( I mean, you could tell that it would be so, but still.
..
Overall, this was probably my favorite episode so far. Still things I didn't agree with, and still things I miss. Like the building of a really strong friendship bond between the Gaang still seems to be not a priority. And now we've got backstories on people, but the season's 75% done and we should have had some demonstrated growth too. BUT, I'm finally getting to see the "layers of bad guy" that I thought was so unique from the original - where the trio is being sought by both Zuko and Zhao and meanwhile Zuko and Zhao are also against one another. Having them cooperative at first was very meh. Roku didn't fit with how I remember him from the first, but I can get past it. They hit pretty much all the points of the Blue Spirit episode.. which is odd, because now it almost is easier to see the bond between Zuko/Aang being possible than it is between Katara/Sokka/Aang (we're told it's there.. but I'm needy and want to SEE it not just be told.) Again, odd priority choice.

The dialogue is bad I get it now....
#they just tell him he is the avatar?? wasn't there a choosing a toy thing that actually decides if you are the avatar.....#so far so much exposition but they dont explain why he is the avatar.... well...#i am this because i do all this but we are not going to show you and also i am scared of all of this btw#how is the episode one hour long and they dont show things they just tell them to you already... its been 15 minutes#gyatso screaming for aang and it just sounds like a non enthusiastic AAAAH akdaj dont make me laugh in the middle of the air nomads genocide#i dont think showing the genocide does much tbh they should have just made an aang pov episode before he leaves and then after he is found#adds more to when aang finds them all dead later... we can all guess what happened#zuko's avatar statues hello??? are they spiritually connected to the avatar??? what#zuko's voice is so nice... no complaints#the whale carcass building goes unbelievable hard.#the thing is that the cast is so good...#zuko maniaclly sketching aang and it looks like the 'you seem easy to draw' twitter thing ajdhaks#the end credits music.... they knew it was too good to top#if the writers are the same... how come there are so many complaints about shit writing??? how did this happen#i am still thinking that not knowing the genocide happened until aang does is better bc we get the knowledge AND his reaction to it which is#more emotional bc you wonder what happened for him to end up there but alas...#watching natla#talking tag

NATLA Episode 1 ReAction/Commentary
oh, who this? why we running
Earthbender! Wait? is this ba sing se? we in the middle of the war?
Wait! Sozin? That you?!
It is you! Ohhh, I get when we are now
Aang! Hi Aang!
wow look at everything! Look at how much bending we have gotten! so much bending!
The comet festival? We get to learn about the comet already?!
Look at all those sky bison! So many of them!
Ah, the council meeting. Poor Gyatso being outnumbered in his wisdom
Appa!!
I agree Aang, if you are unable to feed the baby sky bison then you should not have the responsibility of being the avatar, that is sending mixed signals indeed
So that’s how they managed to get up there
Look at this amount of bending! So much bending!
Oh, so that’s how it happened. Thank you Gyatso for efforts in protecting them.
Ooo, nice transition in my opinion … oh! she’s in the old fire nation ship
Wolf Cove! Do we know it’s called wolf cove? Is that new? If so I like it a lot, if not then I relinquish my membership card
This is a lot more people than I thought there would be
Hi Sokka!! Look at all those kids! Is that one closer to Sokka and Katara’s age?
Heh, you doing a great job Sokka, keep up the good work!
Oh, so we know what really happened at the last raid.
Katara should have held up the paddle in response to Sokka’s question if she’s the one doing it, would have been hysterical non-verbal sibling interaction, but I digress
Not the canoe!
Zuko!
Haha, Sokka wanting to leave Aang behind, classic Sokka behavior in meeting an unconscious suspicious person in the cold
GranGran!!
Iroh!!
It sure is your destiny Zuko, just no in the way you think it is!
Wait? Who undressed him? Everyone left the hut right? Did Aang do it in his sleep?
GranGran gets to narrate the famous lines?! Interesting… actually this whole communal meeting is very interesting
Oh these flash backs, wait, three years ago? That’s so recent. How old are they supposed to be in this iteration?
Like how Iroh is trying to keep jolly while also trying to get Zuko to grasp his situation more clearly, and of course his Jasmine Tea
Very nice lesson on the heart of bending
Dun-Dun-Dun, Zuko has arrived!
Katara helping Sokka gear up is very sweet
Dun-Dun-Dun part two, the Avatar has been with us the whole time
:( Sokka, don’t be mean
Nice interaction between Sokka and Katara with both pulling on what their parents told them
“I am Sokka, Son of Hakoda, Lord of...” WINTERFELL! (i’m sorry i’m sorry, my brain couldn’t help it)
Oh, this leader vs leader challenge is a fun spin on the narrative
So much Bending! and the Rocks!
Enjoying the Saga of Lead Wolf Warrior Sokka
That conversation, wow Iroh is good at the whole saying what you mean to say without outright saying it
Ah yes, I’m sure someone one day will agree to have Jasmine Tea with you Iroh
Okay, saw that transition coming but doesn’t make it any less fun
That was a fun sequence
That’s a lot of destruction and Sokka took Katara so how is she going to comfort Aang to bring him back?
Oh, Gyatso, that’s how, I see, Thank you again Gyatso for all you have done for us
Careful Zuko, you don’t want to burn all of your hard work on your wall

we’ve had what, a month and some change since netflix atla came out? i know my reactions to it were pretty negative at first, but as time has passed i think it’s really grown on me. of course the original will always be better, but i think the writing and characterization in natla did not only do justice to the original, but it completely blew me away, and at the end of the day they did the absolute best that they i’m sorry i’m sorry i can’t do this not even on april fools it’s not funny i’m gonna be sick

Was thinking about the tendency of fandom to retcon and backtrack particularly when gunning for a character's redemption, and how that indicates to each individual person that whatever they feel the need to retcon and 'make better' somehow is really just an indication of what they feel, however discreetly, constitutes "irredeemable behaviour".
Specifically in regards to people liking a 'softer more human' reaction of Azula seeing Zuko get burned in NATLA compared to the original show, and how that may set up subsequently more of a redemption arc for her. Which just feels like code for "an abused child being happy that her brother has, in her eyes, permanently lost their father's favour and thus secured her spot as always being at the top could not ever potentially be redeemed," and that people have to retain a certain amount of 'normal' responses in order to be worthy of growth and change in the eyes of the masses, I guess.
Which you do you. Personally I like it when characters are just Worse and that also doesn't mean they can't potentially change, climb, and even (gasp) regret and feel shame over the old happiness and glee they used to feel, because now they know what actual, secure happiness feels like

Okay so this might be a controversial opinion (not sure tho I haven't many people talk about it so IT CAN VERY MUCH BE COMMON) but I think what Netflix did to June and Iroh was a change for the better. I've seen people say that it's sexist that "they made her simp for him" but I see this more as turning the least funny joke in the og to something funny.
We went from "old man likes a younger woman and harraseses her LAUGH FUNNY" (which especially makes me cringe as I have a family member just like that so I've seen enough of that bullshit for a life time)
And now we have: Woman who just likes old men, old man who's like "nice I can still get it 👍👍" (Like look at his expression, he doesn't look uncomfortable to me) and some cringe ass teenager who wants to die witnessing it. Like. Maybe it's just that I grew up on the internet and my sense of humor is very broken but- I do find it funny. Especially Zuko's reaction.
Tumblr media
Like cmon. That's funny.
Also she wasn't really simping for him tbh, just made two comments on how he's hot and walked away. Overall from all changes that tried to make ATLA "less problematic" THIS ONE IS GOOD BEACUSE YES THE OG VERSION SUCKED. There's a lot of things NATLA did wrong but let's reconize the thing they did good.
